Is Florida about to increase its number of uninsured?
This week, the U.S. Census Bureau revealed that 1 in 5 Floridians have no health insurance. Florida has the dubious honor of ranking third in the U.S., besides Texas and New Mexico, in the number of uninsured citizens.
For many of these uninsured Floridians, the only medical coverage they currently have if they are in a car crash is Personal Injury Protection (PIP) under the No-Fault law.
Forty percent of all crash victims treated at hospital emergency rooms in Florida have no health coverage other than PIP.
If Governor Crist and the Florida Legislature allow the No-Fault system to expire, these people will have no health coverage at all. Floridians with no health insurance could face personal financial disaster after a crash. This will lead to more uncompensated care by hospitals and more costs absorbed by communities.
The loss of PIP would harm the health of our communities, increase the cost of health insurance, and threaten Florida’s fragile trauma care system.
Governor Crist, Senate President Pruitt, House Speaker Rubio, please protect all Floridians by including PIP in the September Special Session
